Andris Poga

As of the 2013-14 season, Andris Poga has been the music director of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO).

Highlights of his recent seasons included concerts with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Orchestre de Paris, the Munich Philharmonic, the NDR, WDR and Frankfurt Symphony, the Vienna Symphony, the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Sydney Symphony, the NHK Symphony and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.

During the 2018-19 season, Andris Poga will be conducting the WDR Sinfonieorchester, the MDR Sinfonieorchester, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester Hamburg, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France as well as the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic, amongst others. In October 2018, for the 100th anniversary of Latvia, he will tour across Germany, France and Switzerland with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra.

Andris has graduated the conducting department of the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music and studied philosophy at the University of Latvia. From 2004 to 2005, he followed a conducting course with Uroš Lajovic at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts. He did also take master classes with Seiji Ozawa and Leif Segerstam.

In 2010, Andris Poga won First Prize at the Evgeny Svetlanov International Conducting Competition, which thrust him into the international scene. He became an assistant to Paavo Järvi at the Orchestre de Paris, working with him from 2011 to 2014. From 2012 to 2014, he worked as an assistant conductor for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. During the Munich Philharmonic’s tour across Asia in October 2014, he successfully filled in for Lorin Maazel and Valery Gergiev.

Within a few years, Andris Poga has acquired an astonishing broad repertoire. He particularly enjoys interpreting the works by Richard Strauss, Alfred Schnittke and Dmitri Shostakovich as well as by his fellow Latvian Peteris Vasks.
