The Management Symphony

The Management Symphony

They work in the industry, in companies, hospitals, offices, universities, agencies and administration - and they love to make music on a high level: once a year, 100 executives of the German economy come together to play a concert as “The Management Symphony”.

The Management Symphony was founded in 1999 at the Gewandhaus Leipzig and since then, its members meet once a year for four days of rehearsals and a concert. To this day, the project has been a success, partly because of the unmatched atmosphere of the city of Leipzig, but also because of the professional working environment at the Gewandhaus and the contribution of some of the vocal artists of the Gewandhausorchester.

Since 2014, The Management Symphony is also featured in other concert halls having their own orchestra, such as the Philharmonie Essen, where they played Dvorak’s Symphony No. 6 in 2014, or the Concert Hall Bamberg with Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in 2015. The same year, they were involved in the 60th anniversary of the Baden-Baden Unternehmergespräche. In 2016, they were a guest at the NDR Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, in 2017, they cooperated with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, and in 2018, they will be working with the Bamberg Symphonic.

During the past 20 years, the orchestra has worked with conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Henrik Hochschild, Riccardo Chailly, Markus Stenz, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Matthias Foremny, Sir Roger Norrington, Tomáš Netopil, Jonathan Nott and Lionel Bringuier.

The musicians themselves fund the four days of rehearsal. In addition, the “Orchesterstiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft”, a foundation that emerged from the orchestra, donates every year to a non-profit orchestra project.

Whoever wants to be part of The Management Symphony has to apply by submitting his musical résumé and by pointing to their executive position. Some of the orchestra’s members have studied music, others have received years of instrumental education or have won competitions.

Today, the “Orchesterstiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft” counts over 200 members. The Management Symphony do not have to worry about recruiting new musicians: every year, about 120 people apply to be a part of the orchestra: “We are able to staff every instrumental section: strings, winds, drums – and even the triangle.”
