WDR Big Band

WDR Big Band

Among European Big Bands, the WDR Big Band is the first jazz orchestra that has won several Grammy Awards for its CDs. Each member is a soloist with a unique timbre. The WDR Big Band is featured as a guest all around the globe, but is at home in North Rhine-Westphalia.

As a musical ambassador, they bring jazz to a large public, no matter if it is on stage, on air or online. Their repertoire includes the complete jazz spectre, from traditional to avant-garde, from Latin jazz and world music, to funk and fusion, to crossover. The band, whose members come from all over the world, has a special connection with European tradition, especially with jazz made in Europe. This integrative factor is an important part of their eclectic program.

In 2016, Bob Mintzer became the orchestra’s chief conductor; Vince Mendoza is Composer in Residence.
