Khanyiso Gwenxane

A finalist in the 2014 Belvedere International Singing Competition, Khanyiso Gwenxane developed his love of singing as a young boy, and since then he has never looked back. He sang in numerous school choir competitions, both as a choir member and as a soloist. However, his formal music education only started when he was 21 years old.

In 2007-2008, he had the privilege of performing in London’s West End, when he was a part of the Isango Ensemble production of The Magic Flute. He then went on to study at the Tshwane University of Technology, where he obtained his National Diploma and B-tech degree in Vocal Art Performance for opera in 2012, under the vocal guidance of Pierre du Toit.

Khanyiso continued his studies at the South African College of Music UCT under the vocal guidance of George Stevens and the directorship of Professor Kamal Khan, graduating in 2014 with his Post Graduate Diploma in Music Performance. In 2016, he then went on to complete his Master of Arts in Opera at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, studying with Iain Paton.

During 2016, he made his house debut with the Royal Swedish Opera in the role of Ferrando in Mozart’s Così fan Tutte. In the same year, he went on to become a member of the Semperoper Dresden Junges Ensemble for their 2016-2017 and 2017/2018 seasons. During his first season, he had the privilege of appearing and making his house debut as second Nazarene in their new production of Salome, later he appeared as the second Priest in Magic Flute and second Student from Wittenberg in the new production of Doktor Faust. He went on to make his role debut as Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore at the inauguration of the 2017 New Generation Festival in Firenze. During the 2017/18 season, his appearances included Viktorin in Tote Stadt and Borsa in Rigoletto, both with the Semperoper Dresden. From February to May 2018, he made his house debut at the Staatstheater Braunschweig in a guest role as Tito in La clemenza di Tito.

For the 2018 /19 season, he will be a new member of the ensemble at the Musiktheater im Revier in Gelsenkirchen.
