Sergio Azzolini

Sergio Azzolini was born in 1967 in Bolzano, where he studied under Romano Santi, followed by studies under Klaus Thunemann in Hannover. During that time, he was a soloist at the European Community Youth Orchestra. He has won the Carl Maria von Weber Competition, the Prague Spring International Competition and the ARD competition.

Besides his work as a soloist on the modern bassoon, he has been focusing on early music as well. As a baroque bassoonist, he was a member of the Ensemble Baroque de Limoges and of the Concentus Musicus Wien, and played solo concerts with the Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca, the Aura Soave Cremona, La Stravaganza Cologne, the Holland Baroque Society and the Accademia Bizantina. Since 2013, his own baroque orchestra L’Onda Armonica has become a focal point of his work.

Azzolini was Artistic Director of the Kammerakademie Potsdam from 2002 to 2005, during which time he was responsible for numerous concerts, interpreting a repertoire from baroque to avant-garde, as well as for four very successful opera productions with works from Vivaldi, Galuppi, Graun and Mozart.

Several CD releases show his extraordinary stylistic diversity; he is currently working on a recording of all Vivaldi concerts for bassoon, which has already won several awards.

Sergio Azzolini has been a professor for bassoon and chamber music at the College of Music Basel since 1998.
